Nepal protest live updates
Nepal’s government collapsed following a youth-led uprising over corruption, leading to the resignations of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and President Ram Chandra Poudel.
The unrest, which erupted over a ban on 26 social media platforms, quickly escalated into widespread protests against alleged misgovernance, resulting in violent clashes that left at least 19 dead and around 400 injured.

The Nepali Army assumed control of national security from 10 pm. Let's have a closer look at the top developments:
- The Nepali Army took control of Singhdurbar, the government’s main secretariat, after protesters set fire to several buildings.
- As part of a special security operation, 26 individuals were arrested for looting and vandalism.
- Smoke billows from Kantipur TV headquarters as protests in Kathmandu turn violent, with the building set on fire.
- In a statement, the Army said: “The Nepal Army is always committed to protecting the interests and security of the Nepali people… We urge all youth and citizens to remain calm and uphold social harmony and national unity so the situation does not deteriorate further."
- The protests caused extensive damage, including the burning of the parliament, Supreme Court, President’s residence, and former PM Oli’s home.
- Demonstrators are demanding the formation of an interim government as Kathmandu remains in turmoil.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting to discuss developments in Nepal and urged residents to support peace. He said on X: “The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace, and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace.”
- Authorities have cautioned against the spread of misinformation on social media and advised the public to rely on credible sources for updates.
- India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday urged all citizens to defer travel to Nepal “until the situation is stabilized”. The ministry also told Indians who are already in Nepal to “shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets and exercise all due caution”.
