British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan has criticised Eric Trump for his comments about New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, calling his remarks misleading and offensive.
Speaking about Mamdani in a recent interview, Eric Trump accused the 34-year-old Democrat of hating the Indian community and labelled him a “socialist communist”. He also alleged that Mamdani harbours hostility towards both Indian and Jewish people.
Reacting strongly, Hasan mocked Eric Trump in a post on X, writing, "Zohran Mamdani is Indian. This is why they call Eric the dumbest of the dumb sons." He shared the clip of Eric Trump’s interview along with the comment.
Hasan, who has Indian heritage through his parents who migrated from Hyderabad to the United Kingdom, took particular issue with the claim that Mamdani dislikes Indians, pointing out what he viewed as the contradiction in Eric Trump’s statement.
Eric Trump also criticised Mamdani for his political stance, especially his comment during the campaign that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York. During the interview, Eric said New York now has "a socialist... communist.. Who wants to nationalise grocery stores and wants to arrest Netanyahu, hates the Jewish people, hates the Indian population."
Political observers suggest that these accusations are part of a broader narrative aimed at portraying Mamdani as extreme and out of step with mainstream voters.
Mamdani, who is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, has not directly replied to the claim that he “hates” Indians or Jewish people. However, he has repeatedly dismissed personal attacks from political opponents.
Earlier this year, Donald Trump questioned Mamdani’s citizenship and warned of possible deportation if he resisted Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. In response, Mamdani criticised such comments and reaffirmed his stance on upholding international norms.
"I've said time and time again, this is a city that believes in international law," Mamdani told CNN.
