Announcing his victory in the 2025 Canadian elections, Liberal Party leader Mark Carney, delivered a firm message during his speech, directly addressing recent remarks by US President Donald Trump.
“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen,” Carney said to a cheering crowd of supporters. He went on to say, “I’ve been warning for months — they want our land, our resources, our country.”
“Our old relationship with the United States, a relationship based on steadily increasing integration, is over,” Carney said. He added that the global trade framework long anchored by the U.S. — and which Canada has depended on since the Second World War — has collapsed.
“The system of open global trade anchored by the United States… a system that, while not perfect, has helped deliver prosperity for our country for decades, is over,” Carney told supporters. “These are tragedies, but it's also our new reality.”
Carney said he would discuss with Trump "the future of two sovereign and independent nations."
Mark Carney’s rise to victory in the Canadian federal election came amid heightened tensions between Canada and the United States. His campaign was significantly shaped by growing concerns over national sovereignty, particularly after a series of provocative statements from former US President Donald Trump.
Trump recently reignited controversy by suggesting that Canada should abandon its independence and become the “51st state” of the United States — a comment that stirred widespread backlash and added urgency to Carney’s message of protecting Canadian autonomy.
Carney said the coming months would be challenging and require sacrifices.
The Liberal Party is leading on 167 seats as vote counting continued, placing them ahead of the Conservatives, who were leading in 145 seats.
To form a majority government in the 343-seat House of Commons, the Liberals needed at least 172 seats — a target they were just shy of reaching as results unfolded.
