Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly condemned the Red Fort blast in New Delhi, expressing grief over the loss of lives and solidarity with India as investigators probe possible terror links behind the deadly explosion.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy that killed eight people and left over twenty others injured near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening.

“I am deeply saddened by the explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening, which has claimed several lives and injured many others. My heartfelt condolences go to the victims’ families and to the people of India as they mourn this senseless tragedy,” he wrote.

The Malaysian leader condemned the attack and urged global unity against terrorism. “If confirmed to be an act of terror, it deserves the strongest condemnation. There can be no justification for violence that targets innocent lives and sows fear among ordinary people,” Anwar said.

He also praised those who rushed to the scene and the officials leading the investigation. “I also pay tribute to the first responders and to the authorities working to determine the cause of the blast and to bring those responsible to justice. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected,” he added.

The explosion occurred at around 6:52 pm near Lal Qila Metro Station Gate No. 1, when a Hyundai i20 car with a Haryana registration number suddenly exploded while idling in traffic. The powerful blast  destroyed several nearby vehicles, shattered windows and sent pedestrians running for cover.

According to police, at least nine people were killed, including traders, commuters and daily wage workers returning home from their shifts. Over 20 others sustained injuries, several of them in critical condition. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with flames engulfing cars and smoke filling the air.

Disturbing visuals from the site showed twisted metal, charred remains of vehicles, and bodies strewn across the road. Rescue and disaster response teams were deployed immediately to control the fire and evacuate the injured.

Preliminary forensic findings suggest the explosion could be linked to a terror plot, prompting Delhi Police to invoke provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The investigation is being jointly handled by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

Officials revealed that the blast occurred just hours after authorities in Faridabad, about 50 kilometres from Delhi, recovered 2,900 kilograms of explosives during a separate anti-terror operation. The discovery has raised suspicions of a coordinated effort, and security agencies are examining whether the two incidents are connected.

The Red Fort area, one of Delhi’s most visited heritage sites, remains under tight security as investigators comb through CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.
