As US President Donald Trump presses ahead with his bombastic policy agenda in his second term, an increasing number of Democratic lawmakers are coming out as forceful resisters. While several party leaders, such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have been chided for holding back, several lawmakers are making national news for their resolute opposition, the Washington Post reported.
A new wave of Democratic resistance
One of the most vocal is Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), who has been candid in her criticism of Trump and his top supporters. Asked what she would tell Elon Musk, one of Trump's senior advisers and director of the embattled Department of Government Efficiency, she responded curtly, "F— off." Crockett has also blasted attempts to end diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives as "mediocre White boys.
Another prominent name is Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who rapidly positioned himself as one of Trump's most vocal detractors. Where some Democrats began early on in trying to work with the administration, Murphy prophesied a "constitutional crisis" mere weeks after the inauguration. His candid words, specifically his rebuke of Trump's response to Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil's arrest, have distinguished him from more circumspect peers.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a veteran Trump critic, has continued in her confrontational tone. When Trump threatened to deport millions, her office sponsored an online webinar to inform immigrants of their rights, prompting an outcry from the administration. After Trump border czar Tom Homan said she should be investigated for doing this, Ocasio-Cortez lashed back, belittling his familiarity with law and calling for clarification from Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Democratic governors stand up
Among the Democratic governors, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has been at the forefront of pushing back against Trump's policies. Hours after Trump's inauguration, Pritzker condemned the administration's executive orders and barred state jobs for Illinois residents who were involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and were later pardoned by Trump. Referring to Trump's policies as similar to those of authoritarian regimes, Pritzker has made himself an advocate for Democratic norms.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2024, has also taken a proactive role. He has embarked on a national town hall tour to rally opposition to Trump’s policies, warning that “the road to authoritarianism is littered with people saying, ‘You’re overreacting.’” Unlike other Democratic leaders hesitant to acknowledge past mistakes, Walz has admitted that the party failed to prevent Trump’s re-election.
Bernie Sanders and the struggle against oligarchy
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has continued as a progressive resistance leader. His "Fighting Oligarchy" national tour has attracted thousands, highlighting the threats posed by billionaires such as Musk accumulating too much power. Several Democratic politicians, including Murphy, have started embracing Sanders's populist language, marking a party messaging shift.
The future of Democratic resistance
As Trump tightens his grip on power, these six Democrats have demonstrated a determination to push back. Their courage is in marked contrast to more timid Democratic leaders, which indicates they may be charting the future of their party. Whether or not their moves will come to successfully oppose Trump is unclear, but their timely and assertive push-back is a sign of a new Democratic resistance era.
