Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscars joke on Melania sparks political backlash

The 2026 Oscars had their usual mix of big wins and emotional speeches, but one of the most talked-about moments came from a brief joke by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel, who appeared on stage to present awards in the documentary category, took a swipe at US President Donald Trump without naming him directly. Referring to the nominations, he said, “Oh man, is he gonna be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this,” a line widely seen as a jab at US First Lady Melania Trump’s documentary.

The remark quickly spread online and drew strong reactions, especially from Trump supporters and members of his administration.

The documentary behind the joke

The joke was aimed at Melania, a 2026 documentary focused on the First Lady’s life around the time of Donald Trump’s second inauguration. The film, directed by Brett Ratner and backed by Amazon MGM Studios, had a high-profile release earlier this year.

Despite strong publicity and a wide theatrical rollout, the film did not feature in the Oscars nominations. One reason is technical rather than critical. Reports suggest the documentary did not meet eligibility criteria for this year’s awards cycle, largely because of its release timing.

Still, the absence became an easy target for late-night humour.

Backlash from Trump camp

The line landed quickly outside the Dolby Theatre. People close to Trump and several conservative commentators pushed back almost immediately, calling it a cheap shot rather than a harmless joke.

A familiar criticism resurfaced too. That Hollywood seems to go after Trump and his family far more openly than it would others. For many of his supporters, this wasn’t just about one joke, but part of a pattern they’ve been pointing to for years.

At the same time, others shrugged it off. Award shows and late-night hosts have always taken digs at politicians. Kimmel doing it again did not surprise them.

A political Oscars moment

What stood out was how little it took to shift the mood. Most of the ceremony stayed away from politics, but this one line cut through that.

It also came at a time when global tensions are already high, and conversations around media, power and free speech are everywhere. So even a throwaway joke felt heavier than it might have in another year.

Kimmel has never really held back when it comes to Trump, so the comment itself wasn’t unusual. What was telling was how quickly it travelled beyond the awards show and turned into a wider talking point.

In the end, it was just a few seconds on stage. But like many Oscars moments, it travelled far beyond the room.
