US Vice President JD Vance has dismissed viral social media claims suggesting he was involved in a heated argument with his wife, Usha Vance, after an image circulated online showing the pair in what appeared to be a tense exchange at a restaurant.
Vance said the photograph was fabricated and mocked the rumours on X, writing: “I always wear an undershirt when I go out in public to have a fight loudly with my wife.” Several AI-detection tools have also flagged the image as likely manipulated.

How the viral image spread
The picture, first shared by Facebook user Thomas Clay Jr, showed a man resembling Vance in a white undershirt gesturing sharply toward a woman identified as Usha, whose face was not visible. The post, captioned with claims that the couple was having a loud argument, quickly drew thousands of reactions and was amplified across platforms before fact-checkers could verify its authenticity.
Rumours resurface amid past scrutiny
This is not the first time the Vances’ marriage has been the subject of online speculation. The couple, married since 2014, previously faced attention after the Vice President said in October that he hoped his Hindu-raised wife would one day convert to Christianity. More speculation followed when Usha was seen without her wedding ring at two public events in November and December.
A spokesperson clarified at the time that there was nothing unusual about it, saying she “does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes.” Vance later told NBC News that he and Usha found the gossip amusing and opted not to return home to retrieve the ring before a White House event because they “kind of get a kick out of it.”
Political context behind rising attention
Online chatter about the couple has also been fuelled by political reactions to Vance’s immigration stance. Critics have pointed to Usha’s background as the American-born daughter of Indian immigrants while attacking Vance for describing “mass migration” as a threat to the “American Dream.”
Despite the repeated rumours, Vance has stressed that he and Usha remain focused on their family, their three children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel, and that public speculation does not affect their marriage.
