S Jaishankar holds first-ever call with Taliban Foreign Minister

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held his first-ever conversation with Afghanistan's acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, on Thursday. During the discussion, he emphasized India’s longstanding ties with the Afghan people and reaffirmed India’s ongoing support for Afghanistan’s development needs.

Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi condemned the Pahalgam terror attack during his call with S. Jaishankar — a gesture the Indian minister "deeply" appreciated, which New Delhi is yet to officially recognize.

"Good conversation with Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi this evening. Deeply appreciate his condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack" Jaishankar posted on his X account.

Talking about relations of India and Afghanistan he said, "Welcomed his firm rejection of recent attempts to create distrust between India and Afghanistan through false and baseless reports."

He further added "Underlined our (India's) traditional friendship with the Afghan people and continuing support for their development needs. Discussed ways and means of taking cooperation forward."

The phone conversation took place just days after India and Pakistan agreed to cease military actions following Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam attack, an incident the Taliban-led government in Kabul also condemned.

This is the first ever political connection between the two nations since Taliban captured power in Kabul in August 2021.

Although India has not yet officially recognized the Taliban administration, it has consistently called for the formation of a truly inclusive government in Afghanistan. New Delhi has also maintained that Afghan territory should not be used for terrorism against any nation.

This discussion between the two foreign ministers came over four months after Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Muttaqi in Dubai.
