The Israeli military said on Monday it is “currently conducting strikes” on Iranian regime targets “in the heart of Tehran,” less than an hour after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington had held talks with Iran and would pause planned strikes.
According to a Reuters report, the Israeli military confirmed that it was carrying out operations in Tehran even as the United States signalled a temporary halt to its own planned military action.
Trump pauses US strikes after talks with Iran
Trump said earlier in the day that the United States would postpone planned strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days following what he described as “very good and productive conversations” with Tehran over the past two days.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the discussions were aimed at achieving a “complete and total resolution” of hostilities in the Middle East. He added that, based on the “tenor and tone” of the talks, he had instructed the Department of War to delay any strikes.
The pause, Trump said, is conditional and depends on progress in negotiations expected to continue through the week.
Warning over Hormuz and Iran’s response
Trump’s announcement came ahead of a warning that the United States could strike Iranian power plants by Monday evening if Iran did not allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
Iran responded by warning it could deploy naval mines in the Gulf and target energy infrastructure across the region. Iranian authorities also issued maps identifying potential targets, including Israel’s two largest power plants and sites in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait.
Escalation continues despite diplomatic signals
The Israeli strikes in Tehran indicate continued military activity even as diplomatic efforts are being pursued.
As of last week, Trump had said he was not interested in pursuing a ceasefire with Iran. The latest announcement marks a shift toward conditional engagement, although military threats from both sides remain in place.
The conflict has entered its fifth week, with tensions centred on energy infrastructure and maritime routes in the Gulf, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, which remains critical to global oil shipments.
