Israel is serious about reaching a deal with Hamas to end the war in Gaza and bring back hostages, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Wednesday, signalling progress in ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Speaking at a press conference in Tallinn, Estonia, after meeting his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna, Saar said Israel had agreed to the terms proposed by the United States for a 60-day ceasefire.
“We are serious in our will to reach a hostage deal and a ceasefire. We said yes to (US) special envoy Steve Witkoff’s proposals,” Saar said, referring to the American diplomat leading the talks.
Saar added that there were “some positive signs” but stopped short of confirming a final breakthrough. He emphasised that Israel’s goal is to start proximity talks with Hamas as soon as possible.
Trump confirms Israeli approval
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said Israel had accepted the conditions needed to finalise the two-month truce after what he described as a “long and productive” meeting between American and Israeli officials.
The truce, if agreed upon, would mark the most significant step toward ending the conflict since it began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel.
Saar: Pressure must stay on Hamas
While showing optimism about the peace effort, Saar reminded the international community that Hamas remains responsible for both starting and prolonging the war.
“Hamas is not only responsible for initiating this war. It is also responsible for its continuation,” he said. “Pressure must be applied on Hamas. The international community must now back the American initiatives. It must shatter any illusions that Hamas may have.”
Hamas responds to new proposals
In a statement on Wednesday, Hamas said it is reviewing new ceasefire proposals received from Egypt and Qatar, the two main mediators in the region. The group said it is willing to consider a deal that guarantees a complete end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
So far, indirect negotiations have been slow and complicated, but both sides now appear to be engaging more seriously following renewed U.S. involvement.
