Kevin Patel, a 28-year-old Indian-American, was fatally shot in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighbourhood on the night of April 16. The incident occurred around 9:20 pm in the 800 block of West Lill Avenue, a typically quiet residential area. Responding officers found Patel with a gunshot wound to the chest; he was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
According to eyewitnesses, a man and a woman were seen fleeing the scene on foot before police arrived. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident has left the local residents terrified and has once again led to demands for increased police presence in the area.
Local resident Garrett Moores recounted hearing the gunshot and rushing to assist Patel. He, along with a neighbor, provided first aid under the guidance of a 911 operator. Moores described the experience as emotionally impactful, stating, "You almost build a personal connection in those moments. It was devastating."
Alderman Timmy Knudsen acknowledged the community's concerns and emphasized the need for increased safety measures. He has requested additional police presence in the area and urged anyone with information to come forward.
