As suspense continues over the condition of jailed former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, his son Kasim fears the possibility that authorities are concealing “something irreversible".
According to Reuters, Kasim said that not even knowing whether his father is safe, injured or even alive is a form of "psychological torture".
He confirmed that there has been no independent communication with Imran for at least a couple of months.
"Today we have no verifiable information at all about his condition. Our greatest fear is that something irreversible is being hidden from us," he said.
Kasim added that his family has repeatedly sought access for Imran’s personal physician, who has not been allowed to examine him for more than a year. This has also deepened the mystery around the PTI leader's current health condition.
He further alleged that Imran has been isolated intentionally, suggesting that the Pakistani government is "scared of him" due to his popularity.
“They are scared of him. He is Pakistan’s most popular leader, and they know they cannot defeat him democratically.”
Kasim added that he and his brother last time saw Imran in November 2022, when they visited Pakistan after he survived an assassination attempt.
“That image has stayed with me ever since. Seeing our father in that state is something you don’t forget,” Kasim said.
“We were told he would recover with time. Now, after weeks of total silence and no proof of life, that memory carries a different weight.”
Meanwhile, his former wife Jemima Goldsmith said that they are not even allowed to speak to Imran on the phone.
Even though the Adiala jail authorities have said that Imran is in "good health", his party PTI and family members smell a major conspiracy due to the lack of access to the former prime minister.
Khan, 73, has been lodged at the Adiala Jail in connection with multiple cases since 2023 after he was first arrested in August that year.
Neither Khan’s sisters, nor party leadership, nor lawyers, nor doctors are being permitted access, effectively placing him in full solitary confinement. PTI had earlier called the situation “highly alarming" with several members staging massive protests seeking the release of the cricketer-turned-politician.
