Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for India and China to collaborate in ensuring global economic stability, especially in light of the turbulence caused by US President Donald Trump's tariff actions.
He stressed that “it is important for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order,” noting the “current volatility in the world economy.”
Asked about the importance of improving relations with China, Modi said: “India is ready to advance bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, and to enhance strategic communication to address our developmental challenges.”
He added that a stable relationship between India and China “is also crucial for a multi-polar Asia and a multi-polar world”.
“Given the current volatility in the world economy, it is also important for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order," Modi told Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun in an interview.
PM Modi is in Japan currently to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, giving an indication of the purpose of his visit to China amid an intensifying tariff tussle with the United States.
Modi also underlined the significance of “stable, predictable, and friendly relations” between the two Asian powers, calling them essential for maintaining global peace and stability. His remarks come ahead of his visit to China for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
“Stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relations between India and China, as two neighbours and the two largest nations on Earth, can have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity," he said, adding that such a relationship is also crucial for a “multi-polar Asia and a multi-polar world".
PM Modi will head to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. During his China visit, Modi will hold two crucial bilateral meetings – one with Xi and another with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
