Hours before Representative Ilhan Omar was assaulted at a town hall in Minneapolis, US President Donald Trump singled her out by name at a rally in Iowa. Speaking about immigration, Trump told supporters that newcomers should love the country, adding pointedly, “not like Ilhan Omar.”

The crowd booed. Not long after, at a community event in north Minneapolis, a man rushed to the lectern as Omar was speaking and sprayed her with a strong-smelling liquid before being tackled by security.

The timing was striking, but for many who track political violence, not surprising, the New York Times reported.

A uniquely exposed target

Omar has been one of Trump’s most frequent and personal political targets since she entered US Congress in 2019. Over the years, he has told her to “go back” to her country, mocked her hijab, referred to her as “garbage,” and promoted conspiracy theories questioning her citizenship and personal life.

Those attacks have repeatedly coincided with surges in threats against her. At times, the danger has been serious enough that the Capitol Police assigned her a 24-hour security detail. That protection was scaled back last year but was reinstated after Tuesday’s assault, according to people familiar with the decision.

Her campaign has also sought funds to cover private security at public events, a cost that has become routine for lawmakers facing elevated threats.

A volatile local backdrop

The attack took place amid heightened tensions in Minnesota following the killing of Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents earlier this month. Omar had been calling for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, whose department oversees the enforcement operations that have triggered protests across the state.

Trump and senior administration officials have framed criticism of federal agents as hostility toward law enforcement. After the assault, Trump suggested without evidence that the incident may have been staged, echoing a pattern in which violence against his critics is dismissed or reframed.

Rhetoric and real-world consequences

Experts who study political extremism say Omar has long been one of the most targeted members of Congress, facing a steady mix of racist, misogynistic and Islamophobic abuse. Disinformation researchers note that sustained personal demonization can normalize hostility and lower the threshold for physical attacks.

Several Democrats blamed Trump’s rhetoric directly, arguing that repeated dehumanization creates an atmosphere in which violence becomes more likely. Even some Republicans who strongly oppose Omar’s politics condemned the assault, saying disagreement should never cross into physical harm.

Defiance as survival

Omar, who fled Somalia as a child during the civil war and spent years in a refugee camp before coming to the United States, chose not to retreat after the attack. She finished her town hall, declined to cancel subsequent appearances, and held a news conference the following day.

“I’m built that way,” she said afterward, describing herself as a survivor.

Her response has been consistent with how she has handled years of threats and harassment: meeting escalation with visibility rather than withdrawal. Allies say that stance has only intensified Trump’s fixation on her, but Omar has made clear she sees backing down as an invitation for more abuse.

“I don’t let bullies win,” she wrote after the incident.
