In the week following the Justice Department’s reversal on releasing the full trove of Jeffrey Epstein files, President Trump faced rare hostility from within his core base. But a controversial Wall Street Journal story and Trump’s aggressive response have turned the tide, uniting factions of the MAGA movement that had briefly splintered over the Epstein case, the New York Times reported.
A backlash Trump couldn’t ignore
Initial anger erupted among MAGA supporters after the DOJ walked back its pledge to release Epstein-related documents, with Trump’s allies and far-right influencers accusing Attorney General Pam Bondi of failing them. Trump, in an uncharacteristically defensive tone, asked, “What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and… ‘gals’?” He downplayed the Epstein case as “boring” and mocked dissenters as “weaklings” and “PAST supporters,” but the unrest persisted.
A letter, a lawsuit, and a shift
The fury began to subside only when The Wall Street Journal published a report about a crude birthday letter Trump allegedly sent Epstein decades ago — a letter the president immediately denied writing. Trump seized on the article to attack Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, filed a defamation suit, and reframed the backlash as an assault on him by the “fake news media.”
This pivot reinvigorated support from Trump’s allies, many of whom claimed the Journal’s reporting was fabricated. “Now we are united as Trump goes on offense — against the Murdochs, the courts and the deep state,” said former Trump strategist Steve Bannon.
MAGA influencers fall in line
US Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk, who had previously questioned Trump’s role in the Epstein matter, publicly cast doubt on the Journal’s story. Far-right activist Laura Loomer, who had criticized Bondi, credited the article with “reuniting” Trump’s base. She said Trump’s decision to push for public release of Epstein grand jury testimony helped ease anger among MAGA loyalists.
Deep-rooted suspicion remains
Not all scepticism has faded. Conservative media personalities like Natalie Winters expressed continued frustration over perceived secrecy. Mike Benz, a right-wing activist, warned that the MAGA base had been “trained” to demand full exposure of Epstein-related evidence and would not settle easily.
Trump moves to reclaim momentum
Despite lingering doubts, Trump’s legal and rhetorical counterattack has galvanized many of his supporters. By suing the Journal and directing the DOJ to seek the release of grand jury materials — conditional on court approval — he has reclaimed control of the narrative.
But as he acknowledged in a recent post, appeasing his base on Epstein might be an impossible task. “Even if the Court gave its full and unwavering approval, nothing will be good enough for the troublemakers and radical left lunatics,” Trump said. For now, though, his offensive posture has quieted the storm — and once again rallied his movement behind him.
