The inferno, described as Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in more than 75 years, broke out on Wednesday and raged across seven residential towers over two days before being fully extinguished on Friday. At least 146 people have been confirmed dead so far. Officials have also reported that around 100 residents remain missing, while 79 others sustained injuries.

What triggered the blaze
Authorities said the affected buildings had been undergoing renovation work since last year. Investigators believe that bamboo scaffolding and highly flammable foam boards installed over the windows played a major role in accelerating the spread of the flames across the complex.
Contractor under scrutiny
Late on Saturday, Hong Kong officials ordered an immediate suspension of work at 28 construction sites overseen by the project contractor, Prestige Construction and Engineering Company, pending comprehensive safety audits.
