The explosion comes at a time of heightened scrutiny for Harvard University, which has been in the national spotlight over funding and education policy disputes.

An explosion rocked Harvard Medical School’s Goldenson Building early Sunday morning in what authorities believe was a deliberate act. No injuries were reported, but the incident has prompted a joint investigation by the FBI, Boston Police, and the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD).

Police said the blast occurred around 2:48 a.m. local time, shortly after a fire alarm was triggered.

A responding university officer saw two unidentified individuals fleeing the building and attempted to stop them before heading to the fourth floor, where signs of an explosion were discovered.

An arson team later concluded that the explosion “appeared to be intentional.” The Boston Fire Department conducted a sweep of the building and confirmed there were no additional devices, declaring the area safe.

Authorities released CCTV images showing two masked suspects -- one wearing a gray ski mask, brown hoodie with black and yellow lettering, beige pants, and light-colored clogs, and the other in a black hoodie, black and gray plaid pants, and black shoes.

“The FBI is on the scene and assisting our partners at the Harvard University Police Department with what is a very active investigation,” said FBI Boston spokesperson Kristen Setera.

Officials have not disclosed the type of device used or the extent of the damage. The explosion comes at a time of heightened scrutiny for Harvard University, which has been in the national spotlight over funding and education policy disputes.

Police have urged anyone with information about the suspects to contact the HUPD Detective Bureau.
