From S-400 to S-500: Why India wants a more advanced air defence shield from Russia after Operation Sindoor success

As the security environment becomes more complex, with newer and faster threats emerging from both Pakistan and China, India is now evaluating whether the S-500 can offer the next layer of protection.

India’s interest in moving toward the more advanced Russian S-500 air defence system has grown significantly after the strong performance of the S-400 during the May conflict and Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The S-400 played a decisive role in stopping Pakistani aircraft and missiles, exposing gaps in Pakistan’s offensive capabilities and giving India a major strategic advantage.

As the security environment becomes more complex, with newer and faster threats emerging from both Pakistan and China, India is now evaluating whether the S-500 can offer the next layer of protection. The S-500 is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems in the world, and Indian planners believe it could strengthen national security for many years.

S-400 success drives India’s shift

The Indian Air Force’s deployment of the S-400 Triumf during Operation Sindoor demonstrated the system’s strength in real conflict situations. Pakistani aircraft and missile platforms struggled to operate under the S-400’s detection and engagement umbrella. This success reinforced the belief within India’s defence establishment that stronger, longer-range, and faster-reacting systems will be needed as adversaries attempt to modernise.

A defence source quoted by Firstpost said, “The S-400 performed very well in Operation Sindoor, and has a huge deterrence and punitive capability. Yes, we are looking at procuring more of the same or the S-500.”

For India, the lesson was clear. If Pakistan could not handle the S-400, then a next-generation system like the S-500 would widen the gap even further.

What makes the S-500 a major upgrade

The S-500 can target threats up to around 600 kilometres away, which is far beyond the S-400’s reach. This allows India to monitor and intercept threats deeper inside hostile airspace.

The S-500 can also engage targets at altitudes of up to 200 kilometres, reaching the edge of outer space. This makes it capable of destroying ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons and even some low-orbit satellites.

The S-500 uses a new generation of radar systems that can detect and track multiple incoming threats at very long distances. It is designed to counter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles.

Given the pace at which China and Pakistan are attempting to modernise their air and missile forces, the S-500 gives India the ability to stay ahead of evolving threats.

Why the S-500 matters in the current strategic environment

India faces a twin challenge. Pakistan continues to rely on standoff weapons and drones, and China is expanding its missile and satellite warfare capabilities. The S-400 already proved its edge over Pakistan, and the S-500 builds on that advantage by covering more space, greater distances and faster incoming targets.

Analysts believe the S-500 could become the top layer of India’s air defence network, with the S-400 forming the middle layer and other systems handling lower-altitude threats. This layered defence structure is becoming essential as missile technologies grow more advanced.

Operational and procurement considerations

There are practical challenges too. The S-500 is expensive and available only in very limited quantities. It will require long-term servicing agreements, technology integration and cooperation with Russian manufacturers.

However, for Indian defence planners, the focus is on future needs. As one assessment noted, the S-500 is not simply an upgrade of the S-400. It is a system designed for the next era of warfare, where threats come faster, higher and from longer distances.
