U.S. President Donald Trump stressed that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan could be a key player in resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking to journalists on Air Force One, Trump praised Erdogan’s influence and his personal rapport with world leaders. When asked whether Erdogan could assist in the war, Trump said:
“Erdogan can. He's respected by Russia, Ukraine, I can't tell you about, but he is respected by Putin and he's a friend of mine. You know, you can see why, I get along with the tough ones. I don't get along with the weak ones. I get along with the tough ones. I don't know what that is. But Erdogan has been great with me. You know, when NATO has a problem with Erdogan, which they often do, they call me to talk to him. And I've never failed in working it out like immediately. Is that right?”
The comments come after Erdogan spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, emphasising the need for renewed diplomatic momentum to secure a “just and lasting peace” in the Ukraine-Russia war, according to the Turkish presidential office.
Erdogan’s office added that Turkey remains committed to pursuing peace and that the leaders also discussed bilateral ties, regional issues, and Turkey’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.
Trump’s remarks underscore his belief in leveraging personal relationships with strong leaders to mediate international conflicts, a strategy he has repeatedly cited during his presidency.
By highlighting Erdogan’s standing with both Moscow and Kyiv, Trump suggested that the Turkish president could play a pivotal mediating role, reinforcing Turkey’s growing importance on the global diplomatic stage.
