Edinburgh Airport confirmed the resumption of flights on Thursday following a major IT issue that had brought all operations to a standstill earlier in the day, affecting dozens of flights and leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
“Flights have now resumed following the IT issue with our traffic controller provider. We thank passengers for their patience and understanding,” the airport said in a statement on social media.
Earlier, the airport had suspended all flights due to the technical problem. “Due to an IT issue with our air traffic control provider, no flights are currently operating from Edinburgh Airport. Teams are working on the issue and will resolve it as soon as possible. We will provide updates when possible – please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight,” the airport had said.
The disruption also affected Edinburgh Trams, which notified passengers: “If you’re travelling with us to @EDI_Airport this morning, please be aware that flights are not currently operating.” On an average day, around 43,000 passengers use the airport, which serves 37 airlines flying to 155 destinations.
Edinburgh Airport, Scotland’s busiest airport and the sixth busiest in the UK, handled around 15.7 million passengers in 2024. Airport teams are continuing to monitor systems to prevent further disruptions.
