Keeping world economies on the edge on what is feared to spark a global trade war, Donald Trump is set to announce his “Liberation Day” tariffs. The US President says reciprocal action is needed because the world's biggest economy has been "ripped off by every country in the world.”
Trump is poised to unveil the sweeping measures in the Rose Garden of the White House at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT), which is 1:30 am as per India time, on Wednesday.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the event and said, “The president will be announcing a tariff plan that will roll back the unfair trade practices that have been ripping off our country for decades. It’s time for reciprocity and it’s time for a president to take historic change to do what’s right for the American people.”
On Tuesday, Leavitt confirmed that the tariffs will come into effect immediately after the announcement by Trump. She hinted that there was room for negotiation with other countries.
“Certainly, the president is always up to take a phone call, always up for a good negotiation, but he is very much focused on fixing the wrongs of the past and showing that American workers have a fair shake,” Leavitt said in press briefing at the White House.
