A crucial round of negotiations between Pakistan and the Taliban is set to begin in Doha. The talks, facilitated by a third-party mediator, highlight the growing urgency to address rising cross-border tensions, primarily driven by the activities of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
According to the CNN-News18 report, Pakistan National Security Adviser and DG ISI Lt Gen Asim Malik is expected to meet Afghan Taliban Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob in Doha. Senior diplomatic source informed that the key ministers and security officials from both sides may also participate, signalling the high stakes of the talks.
From the Afghan perspective, sending a delegation to Qatar reflects the Taliban’s strategic aim to leverage the crisis, assert diplomatic legitimacy, and pressure Islamabad towards formal recognition of its sovereignty. The Afghan side views its participation as essential to project the Taliban as an equal negotiating partner, rejecting any dictation or interference from Pakistan.
For Islamabad, the talks underscore a pressing need to stabilise its western border and prevent internal unrest from escalating amid the TTP’s ongoing hostilities. Pakistan plans to present evidence of increased attacks in Khyber and Waziristan, acknowledging military fatigue and the apparent inability to contain the insurgency alone.
Key discussions are expected to focus on the potential extension of the ceasefire, highlighting Pakistan’s immediate security vulnerabilities. At the same time, Islamabad is likely to push for concessions from the Taliban in return for agreeing to a prolonged cessation of hostilities.
The situation is widely seen as critical, with third-party mediation emphasising the severe breakdown in bilateral relations. While Pakistan focuses on security and counter-terrorism assurances, the Taliban aims to use the meeting to advance its political agenda on the global stage.
