China dismisses Trump’s claims of hidden nuclear tests, says strategy is ‘purely defensive’

China on Monday firmly denied allegations made by US President Donald Trump that it had secretly carried out nuclear tests, calling the claims “baseless” and reiterating its long-standing commitment to a defensive nuclear policy.

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing “has always adhered to the path of peaceful development” and follows a strict “no first use” policy when it comes to nuclear weapons. She emphasised that China’s nuclear strategy is “purely defensive” and that the country remains committed to maintaining a moratorium on all nuclear testing.

Mao added that China “abides by its international commitments” and continues to play an active role in upholding global peace and stability. “China has consistently maintained a responsible attitude on nuclear issues,” she said, dismissing any suggestion that Beijing had violated international norms.

The statement came amid rising global unease over renewed talk of nuclear testing, after President Trump announced that the United States would prepare to resume its own nuclear weapons testing for the first time in more than three decades.

Last week, Trump said the move was necessary to ensure “nuclear parity,” alleging that nations such as Russia, China, Pakistan, and North Korea had conducted secret tests. “The US cannot be the only country that doesn’t test,” Trump declared, directing the Pentagon to begin immediate preparations for potential weapons testing.

China’s response highlights growing tensions between Washington and Beijing as nuclear deterrence and arms control re-emerge as flashpoints in global politics. While the US claims the move is about maintaining strategic balance, China insists its nuclear posture remains rooted in restraint and international law.
