Calling him a “transformative president,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday praised US President Donald Trump for what he described as bringing “peace” between India and Pakistan.

During bilateral discussions in the Oval Office, Carney said, “You are a transformative president… the transformation in the economy, unprecedented commitments of NATO partners to defence spending, peace from India, Pakistan through to Azerbaijan, Armenia, disabling Iran as the force of terror,” while Trump listened and nodded in agreement.

Carney, who took office in April, had earlier visited the White House in May.

Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had reached a “full and immediate” ceasefire after a “long night” of Washington-mediated talks, he has repeatedly credited himself for “helping settle” the long-standing tensions between the two nuclear neighbours—mentioning it nearly 50 times since.

However, New Delhi has consistently rejected the notion of any third-party mediation. According to Indian officials, the understanding to end hostilities with Pakistan was achieved directly through discussions between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both sides.

The ceasefire followed a fierce exchange of fire that began after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was conducted in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians.

After four days of cross-border missile and drone strikes, India and Pakistan reached an agreement on May 10 to halt the conflict.

India has maintained that the ceasefire was a result of direct military communication rather than external intervention.
