Cargo plane crashes near Louisville airport in US, shelter-in-place issued

A cargo plane has reportedly crashed near Louisville International Airport in Kentucky, the state's governor has said, BBC reported.

The plane crashed shortly after take-off, according to preliminary information. The flight was headed to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the crash along with the National Transportation Safety Board, according to CNN.

Louisville International Airport says that its airfield is closed, according to a post on X. A massive plume of black smoke is rising not far from the tarmac at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that UPS Flight 2976 crashed at around 17:15 local time (22:15 GMT) after departing Louisville International Airport.

Louisville Metro Police Department and other agencies are responding to the reported plane crash. Injuries have been reported, police said, CNN reported.

A shelter-in-place has been issued for all locations within 5 miles of the airport, police added.
