A passenger who witnessed the mass stabbing aboard a London-bound train said he overheard a survivor’s desperate cry for help during the attack: “They’ve got a knife. I’ve been stabbed.”
Gavin told Sky News that several people were “extremely bloodied" after the violent incident.
UK police arrested two suspects following the Saturday night attack, which left ten people hospitalised, nine of them with “life-threatening injuries.”
Armed officers, police cars, and ambulances rushed to Huntingdon railway station in Cambridgeshire after the alarm was raised and the train was stopped.
“Ten people have been taken to the hospital following a multiple stabbing on a train in Cambridgeshire. Nine are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries,” British Transport Police said on X, adding that counter-terrorism officers were assisting the investigation.
Gavin said an emergency cord was pulled, forcing the train to make an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon, where armed police boarded soon after.
He recalled seeing a person move through his carriage shouting, “They’ve got a knife, I’ve been stabbed.” The survivor, he said, was “extremely bloodied” and trying to get away from the attackers.
“By the time the train stopped, they were basically on the floor,” Gavin added. “That person ended up collapsing and was taken to an ambulance almost immediately.”
Sky News described reports from the scene as “quite terrifying,” while AFP said a brief stampede broke out as passengers tried to flee.
Another witness told The Times they saw a man with a large knife and that there was “blood everywhere” as people hid in the washrooms. Some passengers were “stamped on by others” amid the chaos, the witness said.
The attack occurred on Saturday evening on a service between Doncaster in northern England and London’s King’s Cross station. The train was forced to stop at Huntingdon, where two suspects were detained. Counter-terrorism units are assisting with the investigation.
AFP journalists reported that police and forensic teams, some wearing white overalls, worked through the night at the station.
Witness Olly Foster told the BBC he heard people shouting “run, run, there’s a guy literally stabbing everyone,” and initially thought it was a Halloween prank. But as passengers pushed through the carriage, he realised the gravity of the situation. His hand was left “covered in blood” from the seat he had been leaning on.
Foster said he saw an older man intervene to protect a younger girl, adding that the attack “felt like forever” though it lasted only minutes.
Other witnesses told Sky News they saw a man holding a large knife on the platform after the train stopped, before police tasered and restrained him.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the “appalling” incident “deeply concerning.”
“My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response,” Starmer said on X. “Anyone in the area should follow the advice of the police.”
The East of England Ambulance Service said it launched a large-scale response to Huntingdon station, deploying multiple ambulances, critical care teams, and three air ambulances.
“We can confirm we have transported multiple patients to hospital,” the service said.
