BLF, a banned outfit, on Monday said it sent its first-ever woman “fidayeen” attacker, identified as Zareena Rafiq, alias Trang Mahoo, to storm a heavily fortified complex belonging to the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) in Nokundi, of the Chagai district of Balochistan. The compound housing a Chinese-linked copper and gold mining project was hit late on Sunday evening.
According to the claim by BLF, Zareena detonated explosives at the security gate, creating a breach, after which the militants entered the compound. The group claimed that six Pakistani security personnel were killed in the attack. Islamabad has not yet issued an official confirmation or casualty toll.
Analysts have described the operation as a major tactical shift for the BLF, with the suicide bombings in Balochistan so far confined to the rival Baloch Liberation Army's Majeed Brigade. The use of a woman bomber — a first in the long insurgent campaign of the BLF — suggests both growing boldness and increased pressure on the group to demonstrate capacity for high-profile violence.
Security experts say the target — a project linked to China — underlines the strategy being pursued by the insurgents in aiming directly at foreign investments linked with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. By striking infrastructure associated with the mining project, militants aim to challenge not only Pakistani state interests but also Chinese economic stakes in Balochistan.
This incident comes amid a surge in militant activity across the province, where there has been a growing number of coordinated attacks on military bases and infrastructure. The BLF's deployment of a female bomber-long associated with ideological extremism and asymmetric tactics elsewhere-raises grave concerns about further escalation and widening insurgent tactics to include what many considered previously taboo.
What the attack underlines for the security apparatus is the disquieting reality that, increasingly, Pakistani insurgent groups are evolving and diversifying their tactics in targeting not just the state's symbols but its strategic economic assets. If these efforts persist, instability in Balochistan may increase further, with a ripple effect throughout regional geopolitics and economic projects connected to China and Pakistan.
