In a candid remark reflecting growing tensions in trade negotiations, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed frustration with India’s recent stance in ongoing trade talks with Washington.
“This is an unprecedented time,” Bessent said. “This is the India I personally wished for - not the one that succumbed to these forces. America, the United States of America, is disappointed with India. Lads, we have come a long way.”

“They’ve been slow rolling things. So I think that the President, the whole trade team has been frustrated with them,” he told CNBC.
“And also, India has been a large buyer of sanctioned Russian oil that they then resell as refined products. So, they have not been a great global actor,” Bessent added further.
The statement came after US President Donald Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on all goods imported from India starting August 1, along with an unspecified penalty in response to India's continued purchases of military equipment and crude oil from Russia.
