Trump urges calm

As Wall Street opened to mixed results, US President Donald Trump urged Americans to “Be cool,” calling for calm amid market uncertainty for the fifth straight session, following a sharp downturn triggered by escalating trade tensions with China.

"BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!" Trump posted on his Truth Social account.

In a subsequent post, Trump declared, “THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!DJT” — a statement that quickly triggered a surge in Trump Media stock and the sharing is slumping since then.

The company’s stock, listed under the ticker DJT, rose by 6.8% after Trump posted on Truth Social and signed off with his initials. Some investors took this as a promotional hint. Trump Media, which owns Truth Social, is the platform he frequently uses, though he typically signs “DJT” only when not discussing stocks.

The post came as markets continued to reel from fears of a global recession amid the intensifying tariff war between the US and China.

Tensions between the United States and China have worsened as President Donald Trump’s administration implemented a steep 104% tariff on Chinese imports, which is set to take effect today.

In response, China has announced a significant escalation of its own trade measures. The country’s finance ministry stated on Wednesday that it will raise tariffs on a broad array of U.S. products to 84%, up from the previously declared 34%. The new tariffs will come into effect starting Thursday, marking a sharp intensification in the ongoing trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies.
