US-based businessman and social activist Sukhi Chahal, known for his strong anti-Khalistani stance, has died under suspicious circumstances in California, according to a Times of India report.
Jaspal Singh, a close friend of Chahal, said he was invited to dinner by an acquaintance on Thursday evening.
“Shortly after dinner, his health suddenly deteriorated, and he died on the spot,” Singh said, adding that Chahal was in good health prior to the incident. “His sudden and unexplained death has raised several questions,” he added.
Chahal, who was the founder and CEO of The Khalsa Today, had been receiving repeated death threats from Khalistani elements abroad due to his vocal opposition to separatist activities, Singh said. He also pointed out that the timing of Chahal’s death, just ahead of the August 17 Khalistan Referendum event in Washington DC, added to the suspicion.
Boota Singh Kaler, another acquaintance based in California, said Chahal’s death has left the pro-India community in shock. “Yet, he remained steadfast in his views and continued his advocacy fearlessly,” Kaler said.
Local police are investigating the matter, and an autopsy report is awaited. “The autopsy report will reveal the truth,” Kaler added.
Chahal, in one of his recent posts on X, had advised Indian immigrants to respect American law and warned against criminal activities. “The United States is a society of law and order. Crimes like assault by foreign visitors will not be tolerated. If you break the law in US, your US visa can be revoked, and you may be ineligible to return to the US,” he had written.
