US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Thursday in Busan, South Korea — their first face-to-face meeting in several years — on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. The encounter drew global attention amid growing interest in the future of US-China relations.
As the talks began, President Trump struck an optimistic tone, saying he expected “a very successful meeting.” He continued, “We have a great relationship. Xi is a tough negotiator. We will be having some discussions, and we agree to a lot of things and will agree on more now. It’s an honour to have you.”
President Xi responded warmly, expressing pleasure at meeting Trump again. “It feels warm seeing you again, because it’s been many years,” Xi said. “We stayed in close contact, even when we did not see eye to eye with each other,” he added.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of strategic and economic issues, including trade, regional stability, and ways to ease tensions between Washington and Beijing.
