Four people were killed and as many as 14 people were critically injured in a shooting that took place outside a club in Chicago's River North neighbourhood, police said. Those critically injured were sent to the hospital, reports have said.
The Mayor's Office of Community Safety confirmed that the drive-by shooting occurred at about 11 pm on Wednesday outside theArtis Lounge nightclub, in the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue. A crowd gathered after the album release party for Rapper Mello BBuckzz.
Police said that a dark-coloured vehicle drove past the club and at least one person who was inside the car opened fire on the crowd of people standing outside the club. Police added that the car immediately fled the scene.
Several people in their 20s and 30s were injured in the gunfire and were transported to nearby hospitals. Eight of those shot were last listed in good condition, including a 29-year-old woman who was shot in the shin; a 29-year-old man who was shot in the thigh," media reports said.
Further, the reports stated, a 31-year-old woman was shot in the knee; a 25-year-old man was shot in the hand and thigh; a 25-year-old woman was shot in the thigh; a 30-year-old woman was shot in the hand; a 29-year-old man was shot in the forearm and a 27-year-old woman was shot in the foot.
The four people who were killed succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at nearby hospitals, police said. They included a 24-year-old man who was shot in the chest and a 25-year-old man who was shot in the head. Two adult women who sustained gunshot wounds to the chest also died, police added, as per media reports. The deceased include the boyfriend and best friend of rapper Mello, the sources told NBC Chicago after the incident.
