One of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites is Kaziranga National Park in Assam, where close to one-third of the global population of one-horned rhinos is found. The park is one of the most beautiful wildlife parks in India and is spread across the Brahmaputra River floodplains, which contain a combination of dense forests, tall elephant grass, and beautiful wetlands.
November to April is the best time of the year to visit Kaziranga because the weather is good and wildlife can be easily observed. The park is closed in the months of May to October because of heavy monsoon rains that cause massive areas of flooding.
The Kaziranga is the residence of a fantastic variety of wildlife, such as the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, swamp deer and the wild buffalo. It is also a haven to lovers of birds with more than 500 bird species, including the pelicans, storks and the migratory birds, which come in the winter. Tourists have a chance to visit the park by means of jeep safaris and elephant rides, which gives them the chance to see wildlife close to them.
The closest airport to Kaziranga is Guwahati, which is approximately 217km, and the nearest rail station is Jorhat, which is approximately 90km from the park. There exist accommodation facilities that are environmentally friendly lodges, comfortable resorts and homestays around Kohora, which is the primary access point. This is better reserved, particularly during high tourist seasons.
A visit to Kaziranga is not only an animal sightseeing trip but also a journey to the beautiful, unspoilt nature of Assam. It is a place that makes you closer to nature.
