AI-generated deepfakes are becoming a major concern for many people, especially public figures. Celebrities are often targeted because there is so much content available about them, making it easier to manipulate their likenesses into fake videos.
To address this issue, YouTube is taking a strong stance by preventing the use of AI-generated videos featuring celebrities without their permission. In collaboration with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), YouTube aims to protect creators from the misuse of their likenesses through AI.
YouTube to work with celebs to combat fake videeos
The partnership will see YouTube roll out advanced technology designed to detect and manage AI-generated content, allowing celebrities to regain control over their digital identities. Starting early next year, a select group of celebrities, including award-winning actors and top NBA and NFL players, will begin testing these tools. They’ll be able to easily flag and request the removal of videos that misuse their likeness.
According to YouTube, what makes this partnership unique is the input from CAA’s roster of clients, who have firsthand experience with the dangers of digital replicas. Their feedback will help refine YouTube’s detection systems and ensure the tools are tailored to protect both artists and creators alike.
YouTube is also tackling another rising concern — the misuse of AI to imitate artists' or creators' singing voices. The platform is developing new "synthetic-singing identification technology" to detect AI-generated content that mimics a person’s voice. Music labels have already begun asking for the removal of AI-generated songs that resemble their artists, and YouTube’s upcoming tools aim to enhance these efforts.
Earlier this year, YouTube introduced a policy requiring creators to clearly label videos containing AI-generated content, ensuring transparency. This means that anyone uploading AI-created work must disclose it in the video description or metadata.
