Recently, widespread reports surfaced online alleging catastrophic SSD failures following the August 2025 Windows 11 KB5063878 security update. However, Microsoft has now publicly addressed these concerns, emphasizing that its update is not to blame for such hardware malfunctions.

According to statements provided to BleepingComputer, Microsoft undertook a thorough investigation after users claimed SSD and HDD issues, including data corruption and device failures, post-update installation. Despite the initial alarm, the tech giant asserts that it could not reproduce similar issues on up-to-date systems in its own internal testing. Moreover, telemetry data and collaboration with storage device partners failed to reveal any spike in disk failures or file corruptions tied to the recent update.

The issue gained traction after Japanese users, in particular, noticed SSD issues during heavy writing operations—such as saving large or numerous files—on drives filled beyond 60% capacity. Affected users reported varied experiences: while some saw their drives revive after a reboot, others found them permanently inaccessible. Devices from well-known brands such as Corsair, SanDisk, and Kioxia, featuring certain NAND controllers, were allegedly involved. Phison, a major controller manufacturer, acknowledged the community’s concerns and is working alongside Microsoft and industry partners to pinpoint the root cause.

Importantly, Microsoft urges caution but reiterates its stance: there is currently no evidence linking the August 2025 security update to these hard drive failures. The company continues to monitor user feedback and encourages customers to report similar issues for ongoing analysis.

Until a definitive cause is identified, users who routinely handle large files on drives at high capacity should remain cautious. Microsoft’s approach reflects journalistic transparency and technical diligence, highlighting the importance of waiting for facts before assigning blame for complex hardware issues in today’s interconnected tech world.
