Elon Musk on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Anthropic, accusing the artificial intelligence firm of building models that are “misanthropic and evil.” The remarks came in response to Anthropic announcing it had closed a $30 billion funding round at a $380 billion post-money valuation.
Replying to a post on X that highlighted the fundraise, Musk alleged that Anthropic’s AI systems show racial and demographic bias. “Your AI hates Whites & Asians, especially Chinese, heterosexuals and men. This is misanthropic and evil,” Musk wrote, urging the company to “fix it.” His post drew more than a million views within hours.
Musk went further, mocking the company’s name and suggesting its trajectory was inevitable. “Frankly, I don’t think there is anything you can do to escape the inevitable irony of Anthropic ending up being misanthropic,” he wrote, adding that the company was “doomed” by its choice of name.
Anthropic is led by CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei and is best known for its Claude family of large language models. Those models compete directly with Grok, the chatbot developed by Musk’s AI startup xAI.
The latest comments follow earlier jabs from Musk. In January, after reports that Anthropic had cut off xAI’s access to Claude models, Musk offered faint praise while airing his frustration. “Not quite on programming, but it will excel in other areas. Anthropic has done something special with coding,” he wrote on X, adding that the cutoff was “a helpful motivator” for xAI, though “not good for their karma.”
Later that month, Musk again took aim at Anthropic’s branding, writing that “fate loves irony” and that the most ironic outcome for a company named Anthropic would be becoming “the most misanthropic.”
Anthropic’s newly announced funding round ranks among the largest private tech raises on record, second only to OpenAI, according to CNBC. The scale of the round underscores how aggressively capital is flowing into frontier AI, even as rivalry between labs spills into public view.
