Ever opened WhatsApp after a busy day only to be bombarded with dozens of unread messages? Well, WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to make your life a little easier. It’s called Message Summaries, and it uses Meta AI to quickly summarise unread messages in any chat.
This means you no longer have to scroll endlessly to catch up. Instead, Meta AI will give you a neat summary of what’s been discussed while you were away.
But what about privacy? WhatsApp says the feature uses something called Private Processing. In simple terms, it means neither WhatsApp nor Meta can read your messages or the summaries. The AI runs privately on your device, and even the people in the chat won’t know that you used this summary feature.
The best part? It’s completely optional. The feature is turned off by default. You can decide whether to turn it on and even choose which chats you want it to work on by using Advanced Chat Privacy settings.
For now, Message Summaries is only rolling out in the United States and only in English. WhatsApp says it plans to expand it to more countries and languages later this year.
This is yet another example of how AI is quietly becoming part of our everyday apps — helping, but without (hopefully) invading our privacy.
