WhatsApp for Android is reportedly testing a new artificial intelligence feature that enables users to create custom AI chatbots. It is currently available to select beta testers and allows users to define the chatbot’s purpose, personality, and appearance, and then engage in one-on-one conversations with the created personalised AI chatbot. WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, has already released this feature on Instagram and Messenger via Meta’s AI Studio.
Meta AI’s custom chatbot for WhatsApp: Key details
According to a report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing an AI feature that lets users create their custom chatbots. It is available to beta testers via the 2.25.18.4 update on the Google Play Store, and was spotted in earlier builds under the name ‘Create an AI’ tool. Further, it allows users to design AI companions based on their personal needs, which can be used as a productivity assistant, a personalised trainer, or simply a friendly chatbot to chat with.
To use this feature, WhatsApp users need to write a prompt describing exactly what they want from the personalised AI chatbot. It will also allow users to enter a personality that suits the chatbot, a feature common in other AI chat apps. Pre-set templates will further refine tone, behaviour, and interaction style, aiming for a more intuitive experience.
Once created, users can either keep this custom AI chatbot private for personal use or generate a link to share it with friends, groups, or on social media. While Meta hasn’t confirmed a global rollout timeline, WABetaInfo has added that this feature’s access will be expanded to more WhatsApp users in the coming weeks.
