WhatsApp tests new group member tags to help identify members: Here’s how it works

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to add custom short, personalised labels next to group members for better recognition. This will enable members to add up to 30-character-long tags to help identify their roles within the group.

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to assign personalised tags to group members, offering clearer identification of roles, responsibilities, or simply their personalities. The latest feature, currently available for select beta testers, will reportedly come with an option to provide 'Group Member Tags' that will let users tag themselves with custom labels in group conversations.

WhatsApp’s ‘Group Member Tags’ feature coming soon

According to WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.17.42 update allows users to add a custom 30-character tag to themselves inside a specific group. The goal is to add context or assign your role in any group with lots of members, so whether you’re part of a workplace chat, a recreational group or a family group, through this tool, you can define how you appear to others.

The report also mentions that the ‘Group Member Tags’ feature can be used to describe professional roles, hobbies, or specific functions. Moreover, these tags are selected and controlled entirely by the members themselves and doesn’t require any admin privileges. Group users can change or edit their tags at any time. However, the tags must not contain special characters, checkmarks, or links.

Reportedly, once these tags are set, they will remain visible even after reinstalling WhatsApp or switching devices. This ensures consistency even when users migrate their accounts. They also do not transfer to other conversations. For now, the ‘Group Member Tags’ feature remains exclusive to the Android beta version, with a broader rollout to other platforms expected to happen in the coming weeks.
