Meta is testing a redesigned WhatsApp interface that prominently features its suite of AI chatbots. Currently available to Android beta users, the updated design introduces a dedicated AI tab on the app’s home screen, offering streamlined access to Meta’s AI-powered features.
Dedicated Meta AI tab on WhatsApp
The new AI tab replaces the Communities tab, though the Communities feature has been integrated into the Chats tab. This dedicated section showcases “Popular AI characters” and organises other bots by topic, aiming to make AI tools more accessible. These chatbots, available in select countries including the US, can generate AI-powered images, create stickers, and conduct searches with Meta AI.
In addition to the new AI tab, WhatsApp is testing an option for users to create personalised AI characters. Previously, this functionality was limited to Meta’s AI Studio on the Instagram website. The integration into WhatsApp simplifies the process, potentially increasing user engagement with customizable bots.
Availability
These AI tools have so far been restricted to a limited number of countries and languages. While they are currently accessible through the main Chats tab, the introduction of a dedicated AI tab signals Meta’s intention to make these features more prominent and user-friendly.
The WhatsApp beta, which includes this redesign, is accessible through Google Play. However, beta tester slots are limited, and no official timeline has been shared for the live rollout of the AI tab. The update is expected to remain limited to regions where Meta’s AI features are already supported.
