WhatsApp could soon introduce an AI feature to summarise your unread chats

WhatsApp plans to unveil a ‘Quick Recap’ feature, which would summarise unread messages from multiple chats. This AI tool will provide users with a brief overview of unread messages in five conversations, allowing them to scroll through long threads quickly.

The popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, has been introducing multiple artificial intelligence (AI) powered updates in the last few months to enhance user usability. Along similar lines, WhatsApp announced the stable release of the Message Summaries feature that enables users to summarize unread messages in chats. However, it only works with one chat at a time. To address this, WhatsApp is developing another feature called ‘Quick Recap that will allow users to view a brief overview of unread messages in selected conversations.

WhatsApp’s ‘Quick Recap’ feature: Here’s how it works

As reported by WhatsApp beta tester WABetaInfo, the ‘Quick Recap’ tool was spotted in the beta version 2.25.21.12 of WhatsApp for Android. However, it’s not usable yet for all users, as it remains under development. It allows users to summarize messages in up to five conversations by selecting the favourite chats in the Chats tab, and then by tapping on the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner.

This will then enable the ‘Quick Recap’ tool, which would provide a tight summary of the unread conversation without opening each chat individually. Moreover, to address privacy concerns, ‘Quick Recap’ will employ Meta's Private Processing technology. This ensures that neither the original messages nor their summaries can be accessed by third parties, including Meta or WhatsApp itself.

Additionally, chats protected by ‘Advanced chat privacy’ settings cannot be summarised using this feature. The feature will also remain optional, and users will have to enable it manually through app settings. It is expected to be rolled out to other beta users gradually with the upcoming updates, followed by a stable release in the coming weeks.
