Users across India are facing disruptions in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, with payment failures reported on Google Pay, Paytm, and other banking apps. According to Downdetector, reports of outages surged in the evening, affecting transactions, fund transfers, and login access.

Affected services

Google Pay users reported issues primarily with payments (72%), followed by website access (14%) and app-related problems (14%). Paytm also saw disruptions, with 86% of complaints related to payments, while login and purchase functions accounted for 9% and 6%, respectively.

The outage extended to banking services, with the State Bank of India (SBI) facing difficulties in fund transfers (47%), mobile banking (37%), and online banking (16%). UPI as a whole was hit, with 84% of the complaints linked to failed payments.

The issues appear to have started in the late afternoon, with Downdetector graphs showing a sharp rise in complaints around 7 PM. Users on social media also reported failed transactions and delays in fund transfers. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI, has yet to issue a statement on the cause of the disruption.

Reason behind the outage

As mentioned, UPI has not yet dropped any official statement on why the UPI services went down across the country. However, Moneycontrol tried making the payment and initially, the money got deducted from the account. However, the amount was credited back to the account with the message "UPI down in India: Users facing issues with payments via GPay, Paytm and other UPI apps".

As of now, we don't know what "technical problems" caused the outage.
