Uber has just launched a new feature in parts of the US that lets women and non-binary riders choose to be matched only with women or non-binary drivers. It’s currently being tested in cities like San Diego, Chicago and Phoenix, and the company says it’s meant to give riders more control and comfort during their trips.
The idea is simple but powerful. If you're a woman who feels safer riding with another woman, this option can help. You’ll see it in the app under a setting called “Women Rider Preference,” and once you turn it on, Uber will try to match you only with women or non-binary drivers. The company also says drivers who identify as women or non-binary can choose to only pick up similar riders, if they prefer.
For now, this is only a pilot, but the early response seems positive. The feature was actually first tested in Saudi Arabia and later in Latin America. Now that it’s in the US, many are hoping it becomes available more widely, especially in countries like India where women’s safety in public transport remains a serious concern.
In India, many women avoid traveling alone late at night, and ride-hailing apps have not always felt completely safe. A feature like this could make a real difference here. While Uber hasn't confirmed if or when it will bring this option to India, it's something that could be genuinely helpful, especially in metro cities.
Whether it becomes a permanent feature worldwide depends on how successful these pilot runs are. But one thing is clear — this is a feature many Indian riders would welcome with open arms.
