In the last few days OpenAI’s ChatGPT 4-o model gave users the feature to generate images. One trend that caught on rather quickly was creating images Ghibli style. Two days back, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that OpenAI’s GPUs were “melting”. “It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. but our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully won’t be long! ChatGPT free tier will get 3 generations per day soon,” Altman had said.
Now, Altman in another post on X said that “can yall please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep [sic.]”. Altman’s post generated a lot of comments from users and he did reply to some of them. A user suggested that Altman should fire his team. “no thanks. In addition to building agi this team is on trajectory to build the biggest website in the world from a cold start 2.33 years ago. best team in the world, it's just hard,” he said.
Altman was also asked about when AGI or Artificial General Intelligence could come out of OpenAI’s stables. “It will come sooner if you stop using our gpus to make images…,” said Altman.
As far as generating images is concerned, it clearly has put a lot of strain on OpenAI’s GPU resources, leading to processing limitations. Many free-tier users have already encountered errors when attempting to generate images. ChatGPT also restricts the ability to modify real human faces into Ghibli-style artwork, allowing only general illustrations. As of now, no further limitations have been put by OpenAI but going by Altman’s post, there might be some in the offing.
