Spotify confirms app freezing issue on Android; here’s a solution for you

Spotify has acknowledged that its Android app is freezing for many users on Wi-Fi networks, especially on Samsung and Pixel phones. A temporary workaround is available until a fix arrives.

Spotify has confirmed that its Android app is facing a freezing and crashing issue for a section of users. The company acknowledged community complaints pointing to a pattern where the app launches normally but becomes unresponsive and closes shortly after connecting to Wi-Fi. According to Spotify’s response, the bug is primarily affecting Samsung and Google Pixel devices, while the app continues to operate as expected when users switch to mobile data.

Issue users are facing

User reports across forums and Reddit indicate that this instability has been present for nearly two weeks before Spotify publicly acknowledged it. Multiple users describe the same sequence of behaviour — the app loads, the interface freezes within seconds, and then crashes whenever the device is on a Wi-Fi network. Some have also observed that playback resumes the moment Wi-Fi is turned off or when connected to a different access point.

The reason

Although Spotify has not specified what is causing the bug, some affected users believe it could be linked to router configurations or the presence of Chromecast-enabled devices on the same network. The streaming company has only confirmed that its engineering team is investigating and that a patch is in development. No release timeline has been announced yet.

Temporary solution for affected users

In the meantime, the only reliable workaround is to avoid Wi-Fi while using Spotify on affected devices. Users can temporarily stream on mobile data, disconnect Wi-Fi during playback, or switch to a secondary network if available. Standard troubleshooting steps — such as clearing the cache, reinstalling the app, or rebooting the device — do not resolve the crash, according to multiple reports. Some users have found limited relief by downgrading to an older version of the app, though this is not an official or recommended fix.

The bug appears to be constrained to certain Android models and specific network conditions, not a platform-wide outage. Spotify has said it will provide an update when the fix is ready. Until then, switching off Wi-Fi remains the most effective interim solution.

Annual subscription at Rs 499

If you are unaware, Spotify is offering users the annual subscription at a massive discount. Something that used to cost around Rs 1300 is now available at Rs 499 only for limited time.
