Sonos, the popular US-based audio company, has had a rough last year as its customers have been plagued with countless bugs, degraded speaker system performance, and the company’s CEO resigning last month. However, the audio brand now looks to find a path forward as it is set to unveil a new Android-based set-top box for your TV. With this introduction, the company is set to directly compete with the Apple TV 4K or Google TV Streamer.
Sonos Pinewood Android set-top box reportedly in development
According to The Verge, Sonos is planning to enter the set-top box market by building its Android-based operating system. Moreover, the hardware is being developed by Sonos itself and the report claims that this new streaming box will have a modest build in the form of a flattened black square and a slightly more thickness than a ‘box of cards.’
Moreover, the streaming box is tipped to have a remote as well, which will integrate the company’s Voice Control feature. The streaming tool may also provide a unified experience, curating content from popular streaming platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+. Further, the device may act as a wireless streaming hub for the best Sonos speakers.
As for the device’s pricing, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had revealed in November 2023, had suggested that it could be priced between $150 and $200. However, the report from the Verge suggests that it may be more upmarket, with a price estimated between $200 and $400, making it much more costlier than its competitors.
