Snap Inc. has announced the formation of Specs Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary, formalising its long-term efforts in smart eyewear and spatial computing. The move comes months ahead of the planned public launch of Specs later this year and is intended to give the business sharper operational focus and strategic flexibility.
Why Snap created Specs Inc.
Snap said setting up Specs Inc. as a distinct subsidiary allows clearer alignment around product development while enabling new partnerships and capital options, including the possibility of minority investment in the future. The structure is also expected to support clearer valuation of the Specs business as it moves closer to commercial rollout. Despite operating independently, Specs Inc. will remain fully owned by Snap.
The company has been working on Specs for over a decade, with the goal of rethinking how people interact with computers. Instead of relying on opaque screens, Specs smartglasses use transparent lenses that overlay digital objects onto the real world in three dimensions. Users can interact with these elements using hand gestures and voice, keeping their attention on their surroundings rather than a device.
How Specs aims to change computing
Snap positioned Specs as a response to smartphones and computers that often compete for attention and isolate users from their physical environment. The company said Specs are designed to keep people present and enable shared, in-person experiences. Examples include playing multiplayer games in physical spaces, learning through interactive simulations, or collaborating on virtual product designs with colleagues.
Specs will also feature an Intelligence System that uses contextual understanding to assist users with tasks. Snap said the system is designed to work on the user’s behalf while prioritising privacy, reducing the need for constant manual input. The broader idea is to create a computer that users engage with less frequently because it anticipates needs and handles tasks more efficiently.
Looking ahead, Snap believes Specs could help reduce material consumption by replacing certain physical objects with digital alternatives. Items such as whiteboards, instruction manuals, televisions, and toys could exist as shared digital assets, potentially lowering resource use over time.
Snap said it will reveal the next generation of Specs later this year. The company also confirmed that Specs Inc. is hiring as it expands teams across engineering, design, and related roles.
