Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has slipped another spot in the world’s wealth rankings, overtaken this time by Google cofounder Sergey Brin. According to the latest Forbes Billionaire list, Brin’s net worth has climbed to about $240 billion, edging past Bezos at roughly $239.9 billion. A single-day gain of $2.4 billion, fuelled by Alphabet’s rising share price, was enough to push Brin into fourth place globally.
It marks the second time in recent weeks that a Google founder has overtaken Bezos. Last month, Larry Page leapfrogged him to claim the No. 3 position. Brin now sits just behind Elon Musk, Larry Ellison and Page. Musk remains far ahead of the field with an estimated net worth of around $491 billion.
Alphabet’s stock closed at $317 on December 10, up just over 1% for the day and roughly 10% over the past month. Investor enthusiasm has grown after the strong performance of Google’s Gemini 3 model, which outpaced OpenAI’s flagship systems across multiple evaluations, including coding, mathematical reasoning and trivia. The fact that Google built Gemini without relying on Nvidia GPUs has also resonated with investors wary of sky-high AI infrastructure costs.
Alphabet received a further lift after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed that the Pentagon had selected Google’s Gemini platform for its generative AI development programme.
Amazon’s shares, by contrast, recorded a more modest uptick of under 0.5% on the same day, contributing to Bezos’ slight drop in the rankings.
