OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will soon become more expressive, flexible, and — in his words — “more like what people liked about 4o.” In a post on X, Altman said the company had made ChatGPT intentionally restrictive to manage sensitive areas like mental health, but new safety tools now make it possible to loosen those limits.
“We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues,” Altman wrote. “Now that we’ve mitigated the serious issues and have new tools, we’re going to safely relax restrictions in most cases.”
The upcoming version will allow users to customise how ChatGPT behaves — whether that means using lots of emojis, adopting a friendly conversational tone, or feeling more “human-like.” Altman emphasised that these personality shifts will be entirely user-driven, not engagement-driven, noting: “Only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing.”
OpenAI also plans to roll out broader “age-gating” features in December, which will differentiate between adult and minor users. For verified adults, Altman said, ChatGPT will allow “even more” — including erotica content — under its new “treat adult users like adults” principle.
Things could change for users as OpenAI had tightened ChatGPT’s tone and behaviour earlier this year in the name of safety and compliance. Now, the company appears ready to balance responsibility with personality — and, perhaps, bring back a little of the charm that made GPT-4o so beloved.
