Sam Altman hits back at Elon Musk over OpenAI feud: “Can’t we all just move on?”

Sam Altman’s message comes in response to Musk’s recent tweet claiming that Altman and OpenAI “stole a non-profit” — a reference to the company’s shift to a capped-profit model in 2019.

The long-running feud between Elon Musk and Sam Altman over OpenAI has flared up again, this time on X. After Musk accused Altman of “stealing a non-profit,” the OpenAI CEO fired back with a pointed yet measured response — one that sought to set the record straight while calling for a truce.

In a post on X, Altman addressed Musk directly, writing:

“I helped turn the thing you left for dead into what should be the largest non-profit ever. You know as well as anyone a structure like what OpenAI has now is required to make that happen. You also wanted Tesla to take OpenAI over, no nonprofit at all. And you said we had a 0% of success. Now you have a great AI company and so do we. Can’t we all just move on?”

Altman’s message comes in response to Musk’s recent tweet claiming that Altman and OpenAI “stole a non-profit” — a reference to the company’s shift to a capped-profit model in 2019. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, has repeatedly criticised the firm for what he views as a betrayal of its original mission.

Altman’s reply reframed the debate, implying that Musk once wanted Tesla to control OpenAI and that the nonprofit structure was essential to its growth. His closing line — “Can’t we all just move on?” — captured both fatigue and quiet defiance.

Musk hasn't responded to Altman's post on X at the point of filing this news article.
